Curriculum
Reception
We recognise that children in this very early stage of education have particular needs. As such, Staff are committed to providing good early years practice for our Reception children and ensuring that the children have a very positive and happy start to school. The Foundation Stage underpins all future learning and prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1. The Foundation Stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:
• personal, social and emotional development;
• communication, language and literacy;
• mathematical development;
• knowledge and understanding of the world;
• physical development;
• creative development.
Early Learning Goals set out what most children are expected to achieve at the end of the Foundation Stage. The Reception year represents the final period of the Foundation Stage, and during that time teaching and learning begin to dovetail into the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Key Stage 1
In classes 1 & 2 there is an emphasis in the mornings on the core subjects of English and Mathematics. The foundation subjects, including Science are taught thematically as topics.
Some music and PE is taught as a discrete subjects to utilise specialist teacher expertise. Breadth, balance and coverage of the National Curriculum is ensured through long and medium term planning.
Parents are encouraged to support pupils in home-based activities to support planned learning.
Key Stage 2
All classes within Key Stage Two are of mixed ability and contain pupils of two year groups. The placing of children into the class groups is determined by date of birth.
In Key Stage Two the emphasis in the mornings is given to English & Mathematics. During the afternoons Science is taught as a discrete subject whilst the rest of the foundation subjects are delivered through themed topics. The school ensures that all children cover the National Curriculum objectives by following a two yearly long term plan in each class. This also avoids any repetition for children who may be in the same class.
