We recognise that children in this very early stage of education have particular needs. As such, staff are committed to providing good early years practice for our Reception children and ensuring that the children have a very positive and happy start to school. The Foundation Stage curriculum was introduced by the government in September 2000 and describes the phase of education from a child's third birthday until the end of the Reception year.
Many children will have already encountered the Foundation Stage during their pre-school or nursery provision. The Foundation Stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:
• personal, social and emotional development;
• communication, language and literacy;
• mathematical development;
• knowledge and understanding of the world;
• physical development;
• creative development.
The Foundation Stage underpins all future learning and prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 (normally children who are 5-7 years old). Early Learning Goals set out what most children are expected to achieve at the end of the Foundation Stage. Some children will progress towards the Early Learning Goals at the end of the Foundation Stage, whereas some children will achieve and progress beyond them during the Foundation Stage. The Reception year represents the final period of the Foundation Stage, and during that time teaching and learning begin to dovetail into the requirements of the National Curriculum.
